Does your kid love geology, the study of solid Earth, the rocks of which it is composed, and the processes by which they change? If so, then you might be thinking about surprising them with a geology-themed party on their next birthday. This is a great idea!
Here at Makerspace Lab, we’re passionate about instilling an early love of science and learning in young children. That’s why, in addition to the kids lab coats that we sell in our online store, we also offer up a whole host of resources for parents who want their children to enjoy an early love of STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) subject matter.
One of the best ways to encourage your children to embrace these subjects, rather than be intimidated by them, is to show them that these topics can be fun and exciting, rather than boring and difficult. And what better way to show them that learning can be enjoyable than planning a science-themed party?
Keep reading for some easy ways to create a geology-themed birthday party that your little “rock star” will absolutely love.
1. Make Volcano Brownie Bites
When you’re planning a geology-themed birthday party for your young scientist, a regular sheet cake from the grocery story just won’t do. Instead, we suggest making these volcano brownie bites featured on the Fork & Beans blog. These easy-to-make treats feature red and orange icing that is draped over the brownie, making it look just like a volcano that just erupted!
2. Paint Pet Rocks
No geology birthday party is complete without a fun activity or two. Instead of pin the tail on the donkey, why not have your young scientists paint some pet rocks? A week or two before the party, walk around your neighborhood and collect several dozen smooth, round rocks. They could be big or small, and be oblong or spherical. Grab some non-toxic paints and, after having all of the children don their lab coats to protect their clothing, have them paint the rocks to their heart’s content!
3. Play “Rock Identification” Bingo
If the kids are a bit older, they might enjoy testing their geological knowledge with a game of “rock identification” bingo! You can purchase a premade set with questions and cards (like this one) or you can make your own!
4. Host A Geological Dig
Do you have access to a sandbox? Then you’ve got just about everything you need to host a geological dig! Grab some cheap gemstones (think quartz or obsidian) online, and then bury them in various spots throughout the sandbox. After your kids have put on their lab coats like real live geologists, turn them loose with little shovels and paint brushes to see what they can “discover”!
