STEM Occupations are More Than Just Professionals in Science Lab Coats

STEM occupations are growing at 17 percent while other occupations are growing at just under 10 percent. STEM degree holders have a higher income than non-STEM careers and these very same careers play a vital role in our economy. It is quite clear that STEM education creates critical thinkers, enables generations of innovators and leads to new products. Yet, despite the good it does, our students are lagging behind in other developed countries.

STEM occupations are more than just professionals in science lab coats, it is important in every part of our lives. Technology is continually expanding and engineering is the basic design of our infrastructure. In addition, we will be needing our future generations to tackle the challenges of unfriendly weather changes. In short; STEM activities are critical in the concepts that relate to life.

What is STEM?

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics and is important because it pervades every aspect of our lives. A curriculum that is STEM-based is a real-life curriculum that gives students opportunities to see how our world really works. STEM activities provide minds-on and hands-on lessons that make science and math fun, students do more than just learn.

Some students might be scared by STEM because many perceive it as difficult and, perhaps, boring. But much of this is a misconception. To be fair, STEM is not easy by any stretch of the imagination, but not as difficult as one might think. STEM is far from boring, it is one of the most engaging hands-on subjects in school. Here are a few STEM benefits that many have never considered.
